Why Obsidian Archives exists

The ancient civilizations of the Americas — Maya, Aztec, Inca, Olmec, and their neighbours — produced cities, calendars, hydraulic systems, and visual languages of extraordinary sophistication. Their material legacy is often presented in ways that flatten complexity into spectacle: gold, sacrifice, and lost treasure.

Obsidian Archives was created to describe those civilisations clearly. We cover archaeological discoveries, epigraphic breakthroughs, conservation debates, and the politics of heritage through analyses, field notes, comparisons, and documented research summaries. We care about stratigraphic context, indigenous consultation, scholarly transparency, and whether a museum label tells the whole story.

Editorial principles

We separate desk research from field observation, disclose relevant relationships, and do not accept payment for coverage or rankings. Scores are editorial summaries supported by a published rubric — not scientific measurements or universal verdicts.

Not a travel or treasure service

Obsidian Archives is an editorial publication. We do not operate tours, sell artifacts, offer archaeological permits, or promise access to restricted sites. Any discussion of ruins, museums, or collections is explanatory coverage of heritage practice.
